Course Description

This innovative program integrates the technical knowledge and practical experience of a two-year post-secondary diploma in Hospitality Management (or equivalent) with two years of University of Calgary studies. This unique combination gives students a solid foundation in leading-edge management principles, develops analytical and communication skills and offers global perspectives on the hospitality and tourism industry. This two year BHRM program provides excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue management careers in the hospitality industry. Courses taken are a balance of tourism, general commerce, and non-commerce topics. Graduates are prepared for leadership in the world of international tourism and hospitality. Specific program details are available in the University of Calgary Calendar or upon request. Learning approaches include lectures and a wide range of case studies and projects. Where appropriate, industry experts are involved in lectures, seminar presentations, course development and career planning. In addition, the business school's Business Library has one of the best reference libraries available for the tourism industry. An excellent mentorship program is also available, bringing together industry leaders and tourism students.

The BHRM program allows students to enter the hospitality industry at various managerial levels. Students receive the essential skills, training and focused business courses offered through a Hotel and Restaurant Management diploma (or equivalent) combined with senior business courses offered at the Haskayne School of Business. Course work in the university portion of the program represents a balance between tourism studies, general business studies, and non-business studies. This combination develops senior management skills necessary for competence at the highest levels of leadership. The development of a second language (strongly recommended in the non-business component) is increasingly important in the world of international tourism. The Bachelor of Hotel and Resort Management program is offered jointly by the University of Calgary, Haskayne School of Business, and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Business Department, along with a select few other high-quality Canadian colleges and technical institutions. In 2005, the Haskayne School of Business BHRM Program was “TedQual Certified” by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in recognition of the program’s quality. In addition, the school’s PhD Program in Tourism Management is now first (to date) and only PhD program in the world to receive UNWTO certification.
