BA (Hons) English Literature with English Language Studies

Course Description

BA English Literature with English Language Studies 2 Years, 2 Years (+ 1 term) | January, July, September. English Literature with English Language Studies offers the opportunity to study both traditional English Literature and also English language (grammatically, linguistically, and so forth), and to enjoy the interactions between these two forms of study. Two-thirds of the programme is devoted to the study of literature, criticism, creative writing, and film. The main focus here is English Literature. The minor consists of modules that focus on a range of English language studies perspectives (e.g. Diversity and Change in English, and Language, Society and Power); some modules also provide opportunities for students to improve their English for academic purposes (e.g. English Composition). The degree is available to both native speakers and students for whom English is a second language in their home country (such as Nigeria or Singapore). English Literature here is taught to small groups by energetic and enthusiastic staff, led by Oxford-trained academics with international research profiles in 19th and 20th-century studies. Ideas developed in core seminars are taken forward in weekly small-group tutorials, where half a dozen students are encouraged to discuss and interpret specific passages of writing, under the watchful guidance of their tutor. Our students are expected to read widely, and to develop strong lines of argument and personal responses to what they find, anchored in an informed understanding of the discipline and with reference to the critical debates that animate it.
