BA (hons) Sport and Social Sciences with Placement

Course Description

This degree (formerly titled Coach Education and Sports Development) is designed for those who wish to examine the structure of sport, health and physical activity within contemporary society. You will reflect on the relationships between the body, sport, health and society. Utilising a broad and interdisciplinary range of social science approaches (from sociology, education, politics, health, international development, psychology and management/policy) you will develop theoretical understanding as well as the investigative and analytical skills needed to carry out effective research. By studying this programme you will: * gain an understanding of how to enhance participation and motivation, performance and enjoyment of sport and physical activity * engage with a strong and diverse team of internationally renowned academics and practitioners * have the opportunity to utilise the world-class sporting facilities on campus * complete an (optional) professional placement; gaining valuable work experience and a competitive edge in the graduate employment market * be prepared for a variety of graduate level careers, and be in a position to apply for related postgraduate opportunities.

Career outcomes

The majority of our graduates from the BA Sport and Social Science programme choose careers in one of the programme’s main emphases; sports management and policy, sports coaching and development, physical education teaching; or, the health, physical activity and fitness industries. Several choose to study at Masters or PhD level on programmes such as Sport Management, Sociology of Sport, or Sports Coaching. A smaller proportion of our graduates choose to continue with high performance sport and commence full-time training and competition after completion of their degree.
