Bridging Programme

Course Description

If you have applied for a university course but are unsure about going to university or are looking for support when making the transition from college or employment, the Bridging Programme will give you a flavour of university life and help you make the decision to adjust to university education. It will also help raise your confidence in your studies and allow you to gain the necessary skills to give you a head start on your degree programme. What's it about? The Abertay Bridging Programme is specially designed to help students joining year 2, 3 or 4 of an undergraduate degree course, typically if you have just finished an HNC or HND course at college. It will help you to build confidence in your abilities and prepare yourself for your new course. What does it cover? The Bridging Programme is made up of a series of workshops. You can choose which workshops you would like to attend. Please note that the Writing Coursework workshop runs across 3 days, the Working with Other People workshop across 2 days. If you sign up for either of these workshops, we expect you to attend for all the days. • Abertay in a Day - 9.30am-5pm - Monday 2 September. Your essential 1-day introduction to studying at Abertay, including studying as an independent learner, making the most of your time and a Question & Answer Panel with current students. • Making the most of your classes - 9.30am-4pm - Tuesday 3 September. An introduction to the different ways you will be taught, taking effective notes in class and what your tutors will expect you to be doing out of class time as an independent learner. • Writing Coursework - 9.30am-5pm - Wednesday 4, Thursday 5 and Friday 6 September (all 3 days). A 3-day practical workshop that will take you through the coursework preparation process, from your tutor issuing you with your coursework assignment, through research, to writing and then proof-reading your work. • Working with other people - 9.30am-4pm - Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 September (both days). A 2-day practical workshop on working with other people. In Summer School you will be producing a research poster; Bridging Programme participants will be delivering a short presentation. • Research & Reading Critically - 9.30am-4pm - Wednesday 11 September This workshop focuses on some of the key skills that make university study distinctive - thinking critically for yourself and searching out reliable information as you develop your own ideas about the subjects you are studying. • Abertay in a Day (repeat) - 9.30am-5pm - Thursday 12 September A repeat of our 1-day introduction to Abertay student life in case you missed it first time around. Don’t live locally and need accommodation? If you live more than 90 minutes from Dundee and are applying to come to both weeks’ workshops, we can offer you accommodation in one of the University’s halls of residence. Is it for me? • Yes - if you are coming from college and want to be ready for the different ways you will be expected to study at university, for coursework assignments and for exams. • Yes - if you got your place in clearing and need to get ready fast. • Yes - if you're nervous about starting university and want a confidence boost. The Bridging Programme is designed to be flexible so you can pick which sessions to come to and on which days and times. That way, you can focus on the skills you need most help with and juggle other commitments with your preparations to get off to a good start at university. What does it cost? The Bridging Programme is completely FREE. For students who live too far from Dundee to commute each day who book for workshops in both weeks, accommodation is normally available at a cost of around £100 for the duration of the Bridging Programme. Early booking for accommodation is advised as the number of places available is limited.
