Mechanical Engineering offers the MASc, the MEng and the PhD degrees, as well as an integrated BASc-MASc program. Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) degree The minimum period of study for the MASc is 12 months; the maximum time limit is 3 years. Full details are found in the Graduate Calendar. Research undertaken as part of the Master’s program is normally directed and supervised by a Master’s committee. Whereas the student’s advisor provides day-to-day guidance and direction, the committee is responsible for the overall supervision to ensure that adequate progress is made. The Master’s committee consists of three members. A thorough listing of the PhD requirements is found in the Graduate Catalog; these requirements include: Completion of 30 hours term hours Either a thesis (credit up to 18 term hours) or a major paper (credit up to 6 term hours) Completion of courses to comprise between 12 and 24 hours. Most graduate courses in engineering materials count for 3 term hours each. One undergraduate course at the 450 level or above may be included as part of the total hours for degree completion. At the discretion of the Graduate Program Committee, a qualifying exam may be required not later than the beginning of the final year of the program. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree Students pursuing the PhD will undertake a full time program of study generally for a minimum of three years beyond the bachelor’s degree and no more than seven years. Research undertaken as part of the PhD program is normally directed and supervised by a doctoral committee proposed by the student’s advisor subject to the approval of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. The committee will consist of at least 4 members, with the student’s advisor serving as chair. A thorough listing of the PhD requirements is found in the Graduate Catalog; these requirements include: An additional 4 graduate courses beyond the requirements of the MASc degree Comprehensive examination in the field of materials (thermodynamics, kinetics, structure, mechanical properties, processing, etc.) and in the student’s research field A yearly seminar on the progress of the research Satisfactory progress within each review period as determined by the committee Research dissertation Fulfillment of candidacy requirements. Integrated B.A.Sc. - M.A.Sc. Program This degree program allows Univeristy of Windsor undergraduates with outstanding academic ability to achieve both a BASc and MASc degree in a time period as short as 5 years. This program treats the educational process through the BASc to the MASc as a single coherent program, while ensuring that the requirements for both degrees are fully satisfied. It represents a complementary alternative to the existing separate undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
