Course Description

Recent years have witnessed a renewed interest for Classical Antiquity. Although fewer people know Greek or Latin, the texts of the ancient philosophers, historians and poets -- from Plato to Seneca and from Homer to Ovid -- nevertheless continue to attract readers. Classical culture pervades most areas of modern western society, in particular through the use of classical themes in modern art and literature. For those fascinated by Ancient Greece and Rome, and those interested in language and literature, art, archaeology, history and philosophy, the Classics programme is an ideal choice. The programme offers access to classical culture through the study of literary and non-literary texts. In addition, the programme also focuses on the archaeology, history and philosophy of the Classical Period. The first two years of the programme are the same for all students. The main focus of the programme is the study of Greek and Latin (language and texts), together with an introduction to the other three areas of study: Ancient History, Classical Archaeology and Classical Philosophy. In the third year, students specialize in two of the five areas of study, before eventually choosing one of these areas as the subject of their final BA thesis.
