Course Description

B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Design is an exciting studio practice based subject area that is rapidly expanding with the explosion of new media formats and platforms. Contemporary Graphic Design informs, confronts, persuades, entertains, provokes, directs and can indicate the political, social and environmental zeitgeist of our times. This programme will support you with knowledge, skills and experience throughout your journey to become a highly skilled and professional Graphic Designer. Studio workshop sessions will introduce you to a variety of approaches including; typography, modes of visual culture, visual problem solving, interactive design, advertising, digital moving image, packaging, branding and identity, evolving social media, photography and print. This is a studio-based course where a dedicated and committed team of tutors are available to encourage you to strengthen and question your approach to graphic design through studio based learning, experimentation, creative critiques and personal tutorials. You will also have access to dedicated Apple Mac suites, digital and photographic equipment and industry standard software. The programme offers field trips and workshops to provide you will high-level skills and a full understanding of all that current technology has to offer a graphic designer. Studio practice is complemented with the history and theory of visual culture providing you with awareness of the wider context of graphic design as a subject as well as extending your individual academic skills. The programme offers organised trips to galleries, conferences, exhibitions and seminars relating to your studies. On completion of the programme you will be able to evidence a sound knowledge and critical understanding of: * The contemporary and historical context and theories of Graphic Design, and be able to apply this to your own work effectively through research, analysis, evaluation and selection; * Your refined and resolved design process and its complexities, relating to the appropriateness, effectiveness and professionalism of your graphic outcomes. * Innovative, individual creative solutions, which resolve graphic, design problems, with effective consideration and control of audience and purpose within the implications of broader social, cultural and economic implications. * The initiation of a substantial in-depth, individual final major graphic design project, through the integration of knowledge gained through modules studied at all levels. * Your accomplished approach to concept generation, use of technologies, media and methodologies and resolved solutions, valuing experimentation and exploration to extend and refine your personal identity and direction beyond graduation.

Career outcomes

On graduation, many students will seek employment or practice as Graphic Designers in a design consultancy, as a freelancer or creative entrepreneur, in advertising, digital moving image, editorial design, publishing, packaging, branding and identity, evolving social media, photography, design for print or as an educator and researcher. The BA (Hons) Graphic Design Programme provides a sound basis for progression onto further academic including the MA in Visual Communication at the University of Derby.
