Course Description

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS: METALS CONCENTRATION The metals program at TTU offers a comprehensive experience laying the foundation for a career in contemporary metalsmithing. Our students pursue careers as jewelers, blacksmiths, studio artists and teachers. The BFA curriculum has a series of classes in jewelry, casting, hollowware, sculpture, blacksmithing, drawing, design and history, in addition to general academic studies. Students are exposed to a broad range of techniques and historical metal work in these classes. The BFA metals concentration is focused in jewelry, blacksmithing, or hollowware; emphasis is placed on traditional techniques with a contemporary approach. The use of traditional hand tools, combined with modern technology, is taught with an emphasis on creativity. Students design and create solutions for functional and aesthetic problems using progressively more advanced tooling and skills. Projects range from fine jewelry to architectural ironwork.
