Course Description

An actuary is a business professional who analyzes the financial consequences of risk. They interpret statistics to determine probabilities of accidents, sickness, death, and loss of property from theft and natural disasters. Actuaries use mathematics, statistics and financial theory to study uncertain future events, especially concerning risk management and insurance programs. Actuaries are considered the “financial architects” of the insurance world. The field is highly competitive and requires students to pass exams that lead to professional certification by the Society of Actuaries, the Casualty Actuarial Society and other international societies. Actuaries are in high demand and work for insurance companies, consulting and investment firms, government, employee benefit departments of large corporations, hospitals, and banks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its Occupational Outlook Handbook, forecasts a 21 percent increase in the number of actuarial positions by 2018. The CareerCast.com rates actuary one of the three best jobs of 2011. This multifaceted, professional 130-credit degree program is fully accredited by the prestigious the AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Leveraging St. John's metropolitan location, students have access to the University's longstanding relationships with leading New York-area financial and insurance organizations as well as to mentoring support from local alumni – who are leading professionals in the field of risk management. We also offer apprenticeship and apprenticeship opportunities, scholarships, job placement services, and student discounts for exam preparation courses offered by the Center for Professional Education.
