The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes offers Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering, which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). About 25 percent of your classes will be devoted to common courses all students take in areas such as English, Math, Speech, Social Sciences and the Humanities. The remaining course hours are split between required courses for your major and elective courses you choose based upon your own interests. First-year engineering courses are “Introduction to Engineering” and “Engineering Graphics” as you concentrate primarily on requirements for Math, Chemistry, Physics, and English. We cannot stress enough your need to attend classes and study sessions to increase your chance of success. In your second year, Engineering-related classes include: Fluid Mechanics and Lab, Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Deformable Bodies, and Thermodynamics. Your classes during your third- and fourth-years are predominately Mechanical Engineering and will include more design and computation. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest fields of engineering. Mechanical engineers learn measurement and instrumentation, computer-aided design, computer simulation, computer control, combustion and engine analysis. They learn to design thermal systems for mechanical and electrical equipment including heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration. Students learn how to design and produce new materials for advanced engineering applications. Courses are also offered in subjects related to the chemical processes and environmental control industries. Graduates are highly sought after in a variety of industries such a automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing.
