Course Description

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in English prepares students for a wide range of opportunities by sharpening critical reading, writing and thinking skills necessary for the demands of an ever-changing work force. Students can follow several different tracks in the English program, depending on their career plans and personal preferences. These tracks include course work geared toward preparation for teaching, journalism, creative writing, law, public relations work as well as graduate or other advanced studies in English or related fields. Advisors assist students in determining the appropriate curriculum based on individual plans. Students have the opportunity to work on college publications, such as The Eagle’s Eye, the student newspaper; and The Sierra Nevada Review , a literary magazine with a national distribution and recipient of NEA and Nevada Arts Council awards. Internships are also available for interested students in local media, schools and businesses as well as on campus in the English lab. Extracurricular activities for English students include poetry slams, literary readings, attendance at the Associated Writing Programs Annual Conference, participation in student writing groups, journalism field trips, and more. The English program has hosted renowned writers including Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, Denise Duhamel, Lola Haskins, and Ellen Hopkins.
