Course Description

Accounting involves the recording, reporting and communication of financial information about a business to help managers, investors and other stakeholders make appropriate decisions. Finance is the process where investment, financing and dividend decisions are made to achieve the key strategic objective of maximising the wealth of a company's shareholders. On this course, you explore both accounting and finance and the links between them together with other relevant business modules. It aims to give you a broad understanding of both accounting and finance within the business environment suitable for a wide range of careers and will allow you to build on previous related studies and experience. There is a strong focus on employability throughout the course, through practical application of the theoretical concepts, to prepare you for your future career. The course has been developed with the curriculum recommended by main professional accountancy bodies (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) in mind and as such is ideal if you want a career in the broad field of accountancy. It will also allow you to develop many other transferable skills, which enable you to be successful in a wide variety of graduate level roles, not just limited to accounting and finance. We equip you with the numerical, decision making and communication skills you need to succeed in this field. We introduce the main principles of accounting and we will also familiarise you with the business environment companies work in. We then aim to deepen understanding of the role and scope of accounting and allow students to question theory and place what they have learnt into a strategic context. We use a balanced approach between theory and practice to understand both accounting and finance from different perspectives using teaching staff who have worked in industry and practice. We embed a wide range of extras into your course to enhance your study experience and to give you greater employability and technical skills after graduating. • Develop practical skills and business understanding alongside academic knowledge, allowing you to progress to masters study • Use case studies and real world economic data to illustrate, and apply to the real world, taught concepts and ideas • Develop skills and abilities in • problem solving • decision making • numerical calculations and analysis • research • project management • Develop the core skills employers look for in graduates
