Course Description

English is a global language. It is used as a first, second and foreign language by close to one billion people around the world. Its global reach has made it one of the most successful means of international communication in history. Global English has also created a rich tapestry of literatures in English and given rise to many different varieties of English, from pidgin to creole. BA English at SOAS includes the option of taking a foreign language course in each year of study. For details see the BA English (single honours) syllabus. Students who wish to concentrate more intensively on a foreign language, often including a year abroad, but also wish to take part of the English syllabus, should apply instead for the combined honours BA English and ... . Sixteen Asian and African languages can be studied jointly with English. Programmes that include a year abroad entail four years of study. This degree has a wide variety of potential job sectors it might lead to, most likely including journalism, advertising/marketing/communications, publishing/creative writing, and education.
