Course Description

The Bachelor of Science with majors in Biochemistry and ACS-approved Biochemistry are offered by the Department of Chemistry. These programs are designed for students who are interested in this sub-discipline of chemistry and would like to combine their biochemistry degree with either a minor or major in biology. A minor in biology is a requirement for the degree. These degree programs are designed to prepare students for graduate or medical school and/or employment in the biotechnology industry. The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree requires 21 upper division hours in chemistry and 12 upper division hours in Biology. This program follows the curriculum guidelines recommended by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree with ACS certification follows the guidelines established by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as well as the ASMBM. The Biochemistry programs are designed for students who are interested in an integrated Chemistry/Biology curriculum that brings together the study of the following: fundamental chemical principles; biophysical and structural chemistry of biomolecules with an emphasis on proteins and nucleic acids; new DNA cloning and gene modeling and computational biochemistry; and advanced topics in biology such as genetics, microbiology and immunology.
