Fashion Design - BA (Hons)

Course Description

The BA (Hons) Fashion Design aims to produce creative fashion innovators who are passionate about design. The programme will enable you to develop your own signature style and express your personal philosophy of fashion, with plenty of opportunities to showcase your work. As well as conceptual skills, you will explore the practicalities of the design process, and build your technical skills in areas such as drawing, computer-aided design, the creation of textiles, pattern-cutting and garment construction. You will also learn about the evolution of fashion and explore the relationship between fashion, society and culture. One of the key industry challenges is the use and abuse of world resources through textile manufacture. You will explore these issues to understand how companies can minimise their impact on the environment. Our recent fashion show, ‘Sustainable Fashion’, featured outfits designed by our students to support the Blue Cross, a pet charity which helps sick, injured and homeless pets. The event showcased clothes that had been given a ‘second chance’ via the catwalk to highlight that pets should not be viewed as disposable commodities or ‘fashion breeds’. Our innovative and challenging BA (Hons) programme integrates theoretical understanding with practical, hands-on experience. It combines creativity and business acumen to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need for a successful and enduring career in the international fashion industry. We take a holistic view. You will learn about the fashion design process from the initial concept through to creating (and promoting) a final collection. In the process you will develop core technical skills as well as discovering your own creative design style.
