Course Description

Are you inspired by design and want to shape a better world? This 2.5-year program focuses on the practical and technical application of design skills. Learn about the presentation, documentation and architectural workflow processes for building projects that engage with the site, user needs and the environment. In this hands-on program you’ll develop specialised skills and knowledge through a variety of learning experiences from freehand drawing to digital applications that augment architectural workflows, construction technology and documentation processes. Key features of this program are: innovative and sustainable design problem solving structural and construction technology project documentation architectural project administration. You'll learn to communicate and work effectively with a variety of stakeholders including regulatory authorities and a wide range of consultants associated with the design, construction and building services. You'll contribute to the ongoing development of the building industry and the built environment.

Career outcomes

As a building design graduate your work focus could include: digital presentation and architectural documentation of buildings architectural modelling and animation specialist and technical design areas such as commercial/domestic design and planning retail design and documentation working as part of a technical architectural team to underpin a design team or as part of project management. Your daily activities may involve: meeting and working to a client brief preparing detailed architectural drawings and documentation preparing building specifications visiting building sites for site analysis and investigation analysing bushfire attack levels analysing environmental factors liaising with engineers, quantity surveyors, building surveyors, planning professionals etc to ensure all aspects of the project are properly addressed working to building and local council codes, by-laws and national regulations. As a building design graduate you may work in a wide range of technical positions including: building designer architectural technologist BIM/ CAD specialist domestic and commercial designer/ technical consultant freelance building designer/ practitioner. Graduates can work in architectural practices and building design offices. If you plan to register as a building practitioner and practice as a sole practitioner, you'll need to meet the requirements set out in the Building Amendment Regulations 2009 to qualify to register in the category Building Design DP-AD (Architectural). Graduates of this program, which is accredited under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, will need to complete 1 year's practical experience supervised by a registered architect, builder or building designer to the satisfaction of the Building Practitioners Board. Professional Recognition and Accreditation The program is a state-accredited and nationally recognised qualification that enables graduate building designers to work for registered building practitioners, architects and other design professionals in related industries. The Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) is required by the Building Practitioners Board to register to practice as a building designer in the state of Victoria.
