BA (Hons) Communication and Society and Global Studies

Course Description

Joint honours degrees provide you with the maximum flexibility to study subject areas that really interest you. This gives you the opportunity to study your two favourite subjects within one degree course. Our course combinations are designed so that what you learn in one subject will complement and enhance what you learn in the other. In your final year you can choose either to split your time evenly between your two subjects, or to specialise in one subject more than the other. Communication and Society: Fascinating new forms of politics, economics and creative enterprises are rapidly challenging many core assumptions about human communication and identity. The possession and transfer of knowledge now lies at the heart of daily life and it is more important than ever to understand various aspects of communication. You will look at communication between: individuals groups organisations humanity nature. You will also look at the evolving media through which communication takes place. This course offers a wide choice of interesting and engaging modules. The core of this course draws on Psychology and Sociology, and also includes aspects of Philosophy, History and Anthropology. No previous study in any of these areas is required. You will study a diverse range of topics including: non-verbal, spoken and unconscious communication the history of communication digital cultures. The fascinating range of subject areas that this course covers make it an ideal combination with our modern range of course options. Global Studies: If you are concerned about pressing global crises (such as food security, environmental change, conflict, inequality) and the everyday experiences of people living in globalised communities then this is the perfect course for you. The need for understanding how our world is connected, but also divided, has never been greater. Cultural and social crises are impacting on everyday experience, while work, leisure and identity can only be understood through the global structures that mediate them. This unique course will allow you not only to understand and analyse global trends and tensions, but to engage with the world as a global citizen and professional. You will be able to build a flexible personalised course of study by selecting options taught by experts in the field from across the Humanities.

Career outcomes

This is a major part of the curriculum. Key transferable skills are emphasised and there are opportunities to develop links with organisations and potential employers. As a result we have an outstanding record of graduate employment. Joint honours courses develop a wide range of skills. These include: written and oral communication skills critical analysis the ability to work independently and in groups time management self-motivation a variety of IT skills. Our recent Communication and Society and Global Studies Joint Honours graduates have gone onto careers in: Broadcasting Marketing Publishing Charity fundraising Policy research Business Analysis Other careers could include: law PR teaching business management working for a National Government Organisation. Many graduates also choose to undertake further study on one of our Masters-level courses or MPhil and PhD research degrees.
