Course Description

The Fashion + Fibers program emphasizes professional level accomplishment in creating product-based and conceptual fibers pieces in a studio setting. Through the use of fashion and fiber techniques and methods, students learn design process, conceptual thinking, art and design vocabulary, digital technologies, and fine craftsmanship. The program stresses the blending of traditional and modern techniques and methods to encourage innovation in fashion and fibers. With each course, design process and theory are stressed and reference historic and contemporary examples from fashion and fibers. The program encourages breadth of experience, experimentation, questioning, individual initiative, craftsmanship, knowledge of hand processes, and the search for an individual career direction—finding a unique creative voice with confidence and professionalism. Students in this program have access to a fully equipped fashion and fibers lab. Areas of Focus We believe in learning through making by hand. Areas of study include basic and advanced instruction in: Experimental Fashion Garment and product construction Patternmaking and draping Embroidery and embellishment Sculptural fibers Fashion and Textile History Fiber Arts Surface Design and Dyeing Weaving and Knitting
