Course Description

Our Dance and Sociology courses have been combined to offer you the opportunity to study two different subjects at degree level. This combination will enable you to benefit from high quality teaching across two courses and will provide you with greater career options. Our dance modules will give you a wealth of opportunities to study choreography, ballet and contemporary techniques, professional repertory and new dance works, reading and writing about dance, dance research, Labanotation, dance kinesiology and anatomy, dance-music relationship, dance film, dance facilitation, community dance, dance funding applications, improvisation, and dance history. The Sociology modules of the programme are concerned with understanding the nature of social relations and social structures and how they influence all aspects of our lives. Studying sociology will allow you to develop a range of skills and help you form your own judgements about the fundamental social changes shaping the world today. Placement options There are opportunities for placements in the UK and abroad, for example working as a performer with a professional choreographer, as a teacher or community dance artist in schools and community settings or shadowing professional dance artists, companies or agencies to gain experience of their work, including practice and management.

Career outcomes

Students regularly go on to successful careers in film, television and theatre and previous graduates have established careers as actors, dancers, directors, theatre crew, teachers, artistic directions of their own theatre companies and other arts professionals. Alternatively many students go on to postgraduate study and employment in a wide variety of professions. Social science disciplines lend themselves to a wide range of graduate occupations. Many graduates pursue careers in local government, housing, family care, charities, and social work, as well as the established criminal justice system such as the police, prison and probation. Graduates also go into administration and managerial jobs.
