Course Description

The degree is modern and global in its focus, spanning the period from 1750 to the present and focusing mostly on the twentieth century. Its subject matter includes Britain and Continental Europe, but extends further afield to North America, the Soviet Union and China. The four-day field trip to Berlin available to all single-honours History students in the second semester of the first year is unique. In the first year you will be offered broad survey modules such as World History and the Atlantic World covering a large region and a long chronological period. This allows you to sample many types of history and then choose your area of specialism in your second and third year

The course will equip you with a number of transferable skills, such as the ability to plan and research work, lead and participate in discussion and debate, work as part of a team and individually, and develop critical reasoning and analysis skills. The skills you will gain through this course are those required by employers worldwide and will prepare you for a successful career in whatever you choose to do. As this is a new course we do not yet have employment statistics; however, our students in our existing History courses have developed careers in a large number of fields including: marketing; finance; politics; public relations; publishing; journalism; charity; human resources.
