BA (Hons) Politics

Course Description

You’ll examine key political issues that are relevant to the global community today. The areas that you will study include genocide, human rights, religious activism, protest movements, environmental degradation, major political institutions – including the EU, the US, the UN, and post-colonial states – and important inter-state and transnational relations and processes, including war, terrorism and migration. The course provides an understanding of society and its complexity and diversity while enabling you to develop and sharpen analytical, critical, communicative and interpretative skills. BA (Hons) Politics is taught by a team of expert lecturers who deliver a range of intellectually stimulating modules. The degree combines political theory, political science, political economy, area studies and international relations to provide an in-depth study of contemporary politics and its key dynamics and structures. The course modules allow you to develop skills that will benefit you both academically and in terms of employability. You'll be taught by research active academics whose work is nationally and internationally recognised and informs the course curriculum. You’ll also have the opportunity to take advantage of our strong voluntary work placement scheme.

Career outcomes

This course will prepare you for careers in teaching, the media, social work, administration, youth and community work, business, education, psychology and employment at various levels of government, including within foreign ministries and national UN delegations. The degree will enhance your employability through our strong voluntary work placement scheme. Previous placements include working in the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency office of Simon Hughes MP, and a placement at the European Parliament in Brussels. Recent graduates from this course have become Education Programmes Administrative Assistants, Teachers and Community Workers. If you graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level, including for a place on our full-time or part-time MSc Development Studies or full-time or part-time MSc Refugee Studies. The academic strength of this course means that you can also consider entering the field of academic research.
