BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism

Course Description

BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism embraces the challenges which are faced by contemporary journalism, and prepares you to become a professional journalist. Journalists today are required to be a little bit of a writer, a photographer, a video maker and a sound person, as well as being able to understand how to cut, edit and assemble media in a multimedia environment such as the Web. This degree is designed with a whole field of younger journalists in mind who will be expected to carry all of those skills with them into an assignment in the field. Theory and analysis are integrated with practice, fostering the skills which are essential to both traditional journalism and new media (developing production competences in WordPress, Indesdign, Adobe Premier, Audacity and Photoshop). You will be able to develop your proficiency in research, writing, proof-reading, sub-editing, page layout for print publications and web curating, as well as producing audio, video and multimedia news packages. You’ll have the opportunity to work on both collaborative and individual projects to a high professional standard. By exploring the history, ethics, contexts and conventions of journalistic writing across a range of genre, you will be encouraged to take a self-reflexive approach to your work and explore the importance of journalism both for society and as an object of study. The course offers learning through practice; lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops run by academics and professional journalists; and access to the facilities and cultural institutions of the Southbank.
