Course Details

BA (Hons) English and Media Studies

Course Description

BA (Hons) English and Media Studies focuses on the analysis of the media alongside the academic study of English literature. There is an emphasis, in the English component of the degree, on literary criticism and theory. Much of the theory is shared between the two subject areas and our teaching will encourage you to understand how the two subjects complement one another, sharing both critical and theoretical approaches to written and visual texts, and an emphasis on analysis and close reading. The English component of the degree includes the study of drama as text and performance, and allows you to take advantage of the wealth of live literary performances and relevant plays in London. The Media Studies element encourages you to reflect on how the media operate and to develop a critical understanding of the production of media in a contemporary global context. In the first semester of your first year you’ll take a course that combines study skills with literary criticism. This module guides your understanding of the academic, theoretical and creative aspects of criticism. The second and third year modules focus on specific literary periods, or on an aspect of literary production such as Modernist Literature or Literature in the Romantic Period.
