BA (Hons) Creative Writing

Course Description

BA (Hons) Creative Writing is a practice course: we want to see, hear, read and experience your stories. You'll be taught by a range of writers with experience of all kinds of professional writing, including novelists, film and television screenwriters, dramatists and poets, as well as academics with expertise in literature and cultural studies. This dynamic course offers practical tuition in various writing practices and their theoretical contexts. Our approach is eclectic and innovative, drawing on traditions from the field of literary studies, but also cultural and media studies. So while you will be writing your own prose, poetry and performance pieces you'll also undertake projects in screenwriting, adaptation/dramatisation, radio writing and interactive fiction. We focus on professional writer know-how – such as publicising and social media; developing a relationship with literary agents, publishers and producers; and media law. Throughout the course you will examine key practitioners in all these areas, from novelists, short story writers, poets and stage writers, through to comic book writers, radio dramatists and screenwriters. You’ll be expected to contextualise your work using theory and critical analysis based in English literature and cultural studies – but not to worry, we will teach you that too.
