BA (Hons) Business Studies

Course Description

These courses focus on the study of organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate, and are designed to prepare you for a career in business and management. The units you will study combine theoretical perspectives with current industry practice to enable you to develop an understanding of the relevant knowledge and skills necessary for future employment. Our business courses are designed to be flexible. The Business Studies and Business Administration degrees are taught in common. The first year covers the fundamental areas of business education. In the subsequent years you can work towards a specialism in one of seven areas. The title of your degree is determined by whether or not you undertake a work placement after the second year. This course offers the opportunity for some students to study abroad during the first semester of the second year. We have links with several European universities, currently working with Paris, Madrid and Valencia. All units studied during the semester abroad are taught in English. Students wishing to study abroad need to do the preparatory level one unit, Language and Business Environment.

Career outcomes

This course will prepare you for a career in business through the development of knowledge and skills across several business disciplines such as business information systems, marketing, human resource management, and accounting and finance. The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through a combination of coursework the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching and extra curricula support offered by LSBU’s Employability Service. The BA (Hons) Business Studies includes a year’s paid placement which gives the opportunity to develop confidence and practical business skills and to put theory into practice – further improving your employment prospects. The employment record of our business graduates is excellent. Recent graduates have gone onto roles with organisations such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tesco, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Surrey Police. If you graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level, including our full-time or part-time MSc International Business, MSc International Banking and Finance or our part-time MSc Human Resource Management. If you gain the relevant level of experience working in business, you will also be able to consider our full-time or part-time MSc Business Project Management. Your qualification will certainly help, but in a competitive market you also need to work on your employability, and on your career search. Our Employability Service will support you in developing your skills, finding a job, interview techniques, work experience or an internship, and will help you assess what you need to do to get the job you want at the end of your course.
