BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance

Course Description

Our course offers you the opportunity to gain a prestigious accounting and finance degree at the same time as qualifying as a part-qualified accountant. The latter is achieved by giving you the opportunity to gain maximum exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Fundamentals level. The course offers a mix of accounting, financial and general business units that blend together to give you an understanding of the financial world and the topical issues affecting that world. On a day-to-day basis the course allows you to mix and share experiences with a diverse group of people – all of whom have a common interest in finance and accounting related subjects. In addition to lectures, seminars and tutorials, which are the staples of any course, teaching methods include student presentations, group working, role playing exercises, hands-on computing and computer assisted learning packages. We also aim to strengthen your interpersonal skills to help you establish a career in your chosen subject area.

Career outcomes

This course will give you full exemption from the ACCA Fundamentals level, allowing you to work as a part-qualified accountant in public practice, industry or commerce. It will also prepare you to work as a finance professional, specialising in corporate finance and related areas like equity analysis, derivatives trading or foreign exchange dealing. The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching, including student presentations, group work and Sage/computer skills. Recent graduates from this course have gone onto jobs such as: Accountant Assistant, Personal Banker, Financial Analyst, Payroll Assistant and Graduate/Trainee Accountant. If you sit your exams for the ACCA Professional level (which you can sit at LSBU), you will be able to apply for a place on our MSc Accounting with Finance. If you graduate from this course, you will also be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level, including for a place on our MSc International Accounting and Finance or MSc International Finance. (Please note that these two MSc courses are not linked to the ACCA Professional level.) The academic strength of the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course means that you can also consider entering the field of academic research.
