Academic Practice (MA/PG Cert)

Course Description

The MA in Academic Practice was developed in response to the Dearing Report (1997) which identified the need for accredited programmes of study which recognised the importance of developing university teachers’ knowledge and skills in their roles as teachers. Teaching is not merely a set of practical skills but complex interaction between knowledge, theories, values and emotions demanding substantial engagement by the learner. The programme, therefore, can be seen to follow in the tradition of John Dewey, who challenged Cartesian dualism, positing instead a philosophy that puts process at the centre of education, based on a view of human potential for growth and achieved through experience and reflection.
