Each individual AS level subject has a separate description. There is a five hour practical exam towards the end of the programme. The courses include: exploration and experimentation of materials and techniques; an awareness of subject design and its application; understanding of a variety of working methods; appreciating and understanding contemporary practitioners' work.

The AS leads directly on to the A2 units, which convert the qualification to a full A level. This, in turn, leads to the full-time pre-degree foundation course or Higher Education Degree Foundation in Art and Design or BA Hons degree in your art related subject or an art related career
