Course Description

Captivated by cinema? Fascinated by film? Do you want to know how films work and how to make your own films work? Then this degree is for you. You will develop the depth and flexibility of thinking demanded by this fascinating and diverse subject, gaining a critical understanding of current debates about film as a creative and cultural form by working with our internationally acclaimed researchers. This is combined with the creative and practical expertise gained through independent and collaborative projects guided by experienced practitioners currently engaged in the industry. You will study a wide range of films, from mainstream movies to the avant-garde, silent cinema to the latest independent releases. You will develop your understanding of global film industries and audiences through studying film consumption and fan cultures. This knowledge will inform your own practice in developing your ideas and scripts and following them through to completion. The professional work placements provide real-world experience of film and the media. This develops the independence needed in the final year as you continue to negotiate the demands of group projects as well as focus in on your passions to define your own research topics.

We are well-connected in terms of professional contacts in television, film, design, festival programming, PR and more. Students have gone on to work in media production companies and into freelance work of their own choosing (setting up their own company).
