Course Description

If you are interested in why people commit crime and what society does to reduce offending, then Criminology is the course for you. Criminology combines sociological and psychological approaches to understanding criminal behaviour.​ If you are interested in why people commit crime and what society does to reduce offending, then Criminology is the course for you. Criminology combines sociological and psychological approaches to understanding criminal behaviour. The programme covers the core elements of Criminology as a discipline by utilizing a range of disciplinary approaches. It offers placement opportunities in each year of study and provides a range of progression opportunities for students in employment and further study. Assessment is by coursework only - there will be no exams on the programme. Professional Development and Placement is a core module at Levels 4 and 5, and there is an option for continuing to develop placement experience at Level 6, giving students the opportunity for up to 18 weeks of professional placement experience on the programme.

Career outcomes

Criminology provides a good basis to go into a wide range of careers, from the Police Service to working within Social Services or Youth Justice. This can be in a role where you work directly with offenders, such as becoming a Probation Officer or Prison Services Officer, or a more analytical role, such as data analysis for the National Offender Management Service or Local Government Authority.
