The study of architecture is important for the overall design of the built environment, as well as to raise awareness of the holistic and aesthetic nature of design culture. The exciting new School of Architecture (LAL) is located at the crossroads of the city of Sudbury in the downtown core. Students will take electives on the main LU campus while design studio and other courses will be held in the downtown at the newly renovated LAL Market Square site. The undergraduate Architectural Studies program focuses on design, culture, technology and professional practice. Our program will highlight design and culture for the north – particularly northern Ontario – with an emphasis in developing expertise in wood. Design Studio courses will challenge students’ creativity through the application of practical building solutions for our northern climate, taking into account cultural sensitivities, history and community profiles. Extensive Design-Build and Community- Design projects throughout the program will expose students to real community issues and hands-on building experience. Students will develop an appreciation for the integration of indigenous and natural materials in building and site design, and will develop an appreciation for the importance of collaboration and interaction with other students, faculty, and community groups. Strongly based on a cooperative education model, the first work-term will be secured in industry and related fields, while the second work-term will take place in an architectural firm locally, nationally, or internationally. * Extensive practical applications through Design Studio; * Ongoing Design-Build and Community- Design projects; * Inclusion of individual cultural backgrounds, including Ontario Francophone, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students and communities; * Design studio, electives and work-term experience offered in French; * Access to an Elder-in-residence, while several courses will cover aboriginal knowledge and teachings; * Within the new building, spaces and rooms specifically designed to enhance the cultural and spiritual experience of students; * 26 week (two 13-week blocks) practical co-op internship experience; * A brand new facility comprised of 4 buildings that will offer unique teaching opportunities regarding long-term building performance and sustainability; * Enrolment is limited to 70 students per year First-year course overview: ARCH-1007 – History 1: Sacred Geography ARCH-1505 – Design Studio 1: Place ARCH-1515 – Design Studio 2: Place II ARCH-1006 – Design Thinking ARCH-0100 – Co-operative Term 1 + electives (12 credits) in humanities, social sciences, or sciences.
