Bachelor of Social Work

Course Description

As a growing and challenging profession, Social Work provides vital services for individuals, groups, families and communities with various kinds of issues. Those involved in social work believe in the dignity and worth of each human being and the potential of all persons for continued growth and development throughout their life spans. Our program is fully accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work and will provide you with a professional degree as well as a liberal arts education. At Lakehead, our program takes an ecological view of social work practice with a focus on topics and techniques that are relevant to the social service needs of northern populations. Our approach stresses the social worker's role in providing and facilitating a wide range of helping experiences which relate to the client's needs as a whole person. This will be gained through both classroom courses and field practice experiences in human service agencies with actual client cases under the supervision of a field instructor. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a research project in the final year of your program, a chance to delve into a hands-on research experience with the chance of future publication. Fieldwork practicas also provide you with experience in a supervised human services setting, which might include a child welfare agency, psychiatric or medical hospital, correctional facility, or community or school setting. If you choose to pursue a Social Work degree after you have already completed another undergraduate degree, and have related practical experience, you may be interested in our 12 month, 1-year program which begins each summer.
