Course Description

Want to turn your love of horses into a challenging and rewarding career? At Judson College, we’re interested in helping you do just that. We’ve developed a specialized degree program in Equine Science to prepare you with the academic training and experience you need to achieve your goal. As Alabama’s first college to offer a Bachelor’s degree in Equine Science, Judson has a strong record of excellence in academic training for careers in the equine industry. As an Equine Science student, you’ll get to meet and work with professionals in the equine industry through shadowing experiences and directed internships. If you’re interested in a career in equine-facilitated mental health or equine business management, you can combine Equine Science coursework with Business, Social Work, or Psychology courses for a degree tailored to your interests. You could even join a tradition of successful students in our Pre-Vet program, which offers every course necessary for admission to veterinary school, in addition to hands-on experience with horses. Majoring in Equine Science could qualify you for careers in areas as diverse as barn management , veterinary medicine, professional riding, equine journalism, and therapeutic riding instruction and training. At Judson, you’ll discover that opportunities for leadership through service abound and are even integrated into some of your classes. Through our creative course in Animal Partnership, for example, our students learn how horses can be used in community service projects that benefit senior citizens, children, and people with special needs. Our Therapeutic Riding courses are team-taught by two instructors who are both certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH), and our students gain experience in facilitating therapeutic riding through partnership with Montgomery Area Non-Traditional Equestrians. Most experienced riders have the opportunity to join our varsity Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team, which competes in both hunt seat and Western riding styles. Many Judson students in various degree programs choose not to compete but still take riding lessons, participate in rodeo events, and enjoy spending time at the barn, which is located on campus. We accept boarding reservations annually, so bring a favorite horse to campus with you! Whether you’re most interested in riding competitively, engaging in community service, or preparing for graduate school, we’ll help you find ways to combine your love of horses with both a meaningful college experience and a solid academic preparation for your future.
