Course Description

Judson College Biology majors have pursued career areas in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, clinical laboratories, and graduate programs. Students appreciate the intensive career counseling programs of the department and the personal education that they receive in the Biology program at Judson College. Biology majors have been extremely successful in fulfilling their career goals. A long-standing tradition of achievement by biology majors has paved a road for future students who attend Judson College. In addition to an outstanding selection of basic courses, the Judson Biology program offers exceptional and unusual courses such as Instrumentation, Endocrinology, Ornithology, Piscatology, Water Chemistry, and Tropical Ecosystems of Costa Rica. Biology instruction and coursework at Judson is technology-centered. Lowder Science Building has a modern molecular biology laboratory equipped with all of the instruments needed to teach and learn the important procedures of contemporary science. The Kappa Sigma Chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society is an outstanding organization that honors biology majors and minors at Judson. Membership in Tri-Beta requires a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, which must be maintained for active membership. Leadership and community outreach opportunities exist in the Biology Department. Participation in the Science Club and Judson’s chapter of the Cahaba River Society allows students to develop professional skills while they learn about science and serve their school, department, and natural heritage. Judson science students teach local high school students about molecular and environmental biology. Judson Biology students also maintain Alabama Water Watch monitoring stations on the Cahaba River. This community service activity provides students with research experience and contributes to a major conservation effort to preserve the last free-flowing river in Alabama. Biology majors who demonstrate academic abilities and talent are often invited to work as laboratory assistants in the department. Their undertakings include preparing lab sessions, helping students during lab, and becoming proficient as workers in the laboratory. The Biology Department sponsors numerous interesting field trips, off-campus educational experiences, and fun activities. Biology faculty and students routinely canoe the local rivers, take study trips to the Gulf Coast (Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory, Weaks Bay Nature Preserve, and Gulf Shores National Wildlife Refuge), and maintain the birding list for our local Park. Judson College Biology students receive an educational experience that challenges them to become well-rounded, environmentally-aware, and scientifically adept women.
