Career outcomes

The traditional route for a law graduate is to undertake post graduate professional training and qualify as either a solicitor or a barrister. The work of a solicitor includes taking instructions from clients and advising them in relation to conveyancing and property dealings, civil and criminal litigation, contract and commercial dealings, company and partnership matters, wills and probates. The barrister represents clients in the courtroom in both civil and criminal cases and usually specialises in certain aspects of the law and is frequently consulted for expert legal opinion by solicitors on behalf of their clients. Other career options include politics, journalism, banking, lecturing, property management, insurance, public & civil service positions. What follow-on study opportunities are available? Graduates most commonly choose to apply for post-graduate study at Blackhall Place in order to qualify as a solicitor or at the Kings Inns in order to qualify as a barrister. Graduates who achieve an honours level award will be eligible to apply to study for a Masters by research at IT Carlow. Graduates can also apply for a Masters or Doctoral degree in this discipline or a related field at any of the higher education colleges, either nationally or internationally.
