Art Studio (B.F.A.)

Course Description

Serious artists want an education that will refine their approach, broaden their skills, and help them grow more proficient. As an Art major pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll receive a comprehensive and professional education under the expert guidance of our faculty. This degree offers three studio emphasis tracks: the Two-Dimensional Emphasis Track (including: drawing, graphic design, painting, and print media), the Three-Dimensional Emphasis Track (including: ceramics, fibers, jewelry and metals, sculpture, and wood and furniture design), and the Individualized Studio Emphasis Track (in which students are able to build a degree program to meet specialized individual needs). To attain the B.F.A. degree, you will start your education in the Bachelor of Arts degree program for Art/Studio. You may transfer into the B.F.A.-Studio program at the end of your sophomore year by successfully completing the B.F.A. sophomore review. To apply to IUP for this major, you must prepare a portfolio that meets specific guidelines.

Career outcomes

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Studio prepares students for careers as professional visual artists or for pursuit of the Master of Fine Arts degree. IUP’s Department of Art offers both the Master of Arts degree and the Master of Fine Arts degree. Graduates can pursue careers as art directors, painters, sculptors, cartoonists, medical illustrators, craft artists, multimedia artists, animators, and graphic designers. Employment can also be found through publishers and advertising agencies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half of artists are self-employed. An IUP education provides an excellent foundation for a career in this field.
