Art Studio (B.A.)

Course Description

Artists see the blank canvas and know how beautiful it can become. Similarly, our professors see the potential for extraordinary achievement in new students. Through the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Studio, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, you’ll grow in skills and knowledge under the expert guidance of our faculty. Studio options include graphic design, painting, ceramics, drawing, fibers, metals, print media, sculpture, and woodworking. Students can choose to explore a broad range of studio options or pursue a specialized emphasis in one studio area. Graduates from our nationally accredited program in studio art go on to pursue careers in commercial art, graphic design, web design, animation, and game design. To apply to this major, you must prepare a portfolio that meets specific guidelines.

Career outcomes

The B.A. in Art Studio prepares students for graduate study or careers as art directors, painters, sculptors, medical illustrators, craft artists, multimedia artists, animators, and graphic designers. Employment can also be found through publishers and advertising agencies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half of artists are self-employed. Although artists can expect to find considerable competition for work, both in staff and freelance positions, an IUP education provides an excellent foundation for a career in this field. The Department of Art offers both the master of arts degree and master of fine arts degree.
