All of our courses lead to a Bachelor of Science degree and the Associateship of the Royal College of Science (ARCS). To ensure that our graduates have a broad education applicable to many career choices, some degree options are delivered jointly with other departments: Courses with a management component are taught jointly with Imperial College Business School Courses with languages are taught jointly with the Centre for Co-Curricular Studies Courses are regularly reviewed in order to ensure their content and structure is up to date. We offer three, four and five year study options for the BSc Biochemistry, Biology or Biotechnology with Management programmes: The three-year programmes include two years studying biochemistry, biology or biotechnology, followed by one year in the Business School The four-year programmes bring the first three years up to the same level as the full BSc Biochemistry, Biology or Biotechnology programme, followed by a year in the Business School. The five-year programmes include a placement year in industry or research Some programmes offer the opportunity to study at an approved institution overseas for a year. Students following these programmes are expected to develop proficiency in the language of their host country and will receive training in that language from the Centre for Co-Curricular Studies. The year overseas takes place during your third year of study. Many programmes on offer include a year in industry/research option. This allows students the opportunity to gain experience within commercial companies or research organisations. These 12-month placements take place after completing the second year of your chosen programme. Students following a biotechnology or biochemistry programme follow the same core modules in the first two years of study before specialising, heading overseas, or spending a year in industry in their third year. Core modules in the first year include: Biological Chemistry Molecular Biology Cell Biology Proteins and Enzymes In the second year there are four core modules, including Genes and Genomics and Protein Structure and Function, and an optional course to be taken from outside the Biochemistry syllabus (often a humanities or business module). A wide range of optional courses are available for you to choose from in later years including subjects such as Damage and Repair in Biological Systems, Cellular Signalling and Neurobiology, Cancer, Medical Glycobiology, and Bioreactor and Bioprocess Technology. Course structure The BSc Biochemistry (C700) is a three-year degree. In the first two years you will tackle core subjects to ensure that you receive a solid grounding in the fundamentals. You will then specialise in the final year, making your choice from a wide range of options and research projects. Our biochemistry and biotechnology courses contain topics covering all aspects of the applied biochemistry and the biotechnology industry, such as intellectual property and patents, commercialising technology, and entrepreneurship, with lectures and case studies from biotechnology business leaders and academics. In the final year of the Biotechnology programme you are expected to take course options and a project in subjects involving a significant element of biotechnology. The BSc Biochemistry with Management (C7N2) begins with the first two years of the Biochemistry degree. These are followed by a year in Imperial College Business School. The BSc Biochemistry with Management (C7NG) is a four-year degree. It is identical to C700 for the first three years. These are followed by a year in Imperial College Business School. The BSc Biochemistry with Management and a Year in Industry/Research (C7NF) follows the first two years of the Biochemistry degree. This is followed by a one-year placement in an industrial research laboratory carrying out a research project. The final year of this four-year programme is spent studying in the Business School. The BSc Biochemistry with a Year in Industry/Research (C701) involves a year spent carrying out research in an industrial, medical or other biochemical work environment. This takes place between the second and final years of the BSc Biochemistry. The BSc Biochemistry with Research Abroad (C702) involves a year spent carrying out research in an industrial, medical or other appropriate biochemical/biotechnological work environment overseas. Links with various universities in the EU have been established for the overseas scientific and cultural component of the Year in Europe/Research Abroad degrees. The BSc Biochemistry with Management with a Year in Industry/Research (C7NA) and the BSc Biotechnology with Management with a Year in Industry/Research (J7NF) are five-year degrees, which are similar to C701 and J702. You undertake an industrial/research placement year between the second and third years of the BSc course in Biochemistry or Biotechnology and these are followed by a year in Imperial College Business School.
