Career outcomes

You can enter conditioning and rehabilitation roles in sports clubs and organisations. You can also specialise further through postgraduate study in areas such as sports coaching, conditioning, therapy and rehabilitation. Ed is the owner of Absolute Health, 21-23 Oxford Street, Bristol, BS2 0QT What I do I own and run my own gym, health and rehabilitation centre. I started as a personal trainer, running rehab sessions at a physiotherapist and osteopath clinic. When the original clinic moved, I did the numbers and decided to go it alone. I’d been writing business plans since I left University in 2004 and after opening, we doubled in size within six months. As well as running the gym, I also hold personal training sessions every week and employ four personal trainers, gym staff and self-employed practitioners. How I got here When I applied to Hartpury I wanted to be a football coach. With one of the Hartpury lecturers, I worked with a football team and got to enjoy the injury management and rehab side of sport. So within the first year of the degree I had switched my focus. I didn’t want to be one of those personal trainers that just stood next to people watching them exercise. After I graduated I sent CVs out to chiropractors, doctors and physiotherapists and started working at five different places. I also started doing pitch-side work with Bristol Rovers under-18s and the Bristol Rugby Academy. Then a doctor in Bristol wanted to start sending me patients that were injured, overweight or with high blood pressure. This doctor used the budget he had for prescriptions on rehab, rather than just on drugs. My time at Hartpury I found the content of the modules – especially nutrition, strength and conditioning – has provided me with a strong foundation to build my career on. There were so many practical, hands-on exercises at Hartpury that I felt confident being able to go into rehab work straight after graduation. I think the rehab, strength and conditioning side of the sports business is hugely rewarding. My advice to people thinking about Hartpury is study as much as you can and keep your knowledge range broad. In the current economic climate, you need to be versatile and able to use your skills in different ways to help as many people as you can.
