Acupuncture

Course Description

Acupuncture is a health practice and component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete health care system approach to treating and preventing disease. Practiced for thousands of years, acupuncture has gained more attention as an alternative and complementary treatment choice in western culture, creating excellent career opportunities. In addition to acupuncture, TCM also includes Chinese herbology, diet therapy, tuina, and specific exercises such as tai chi and qigong. Admission to the Acupuncture program requires at least 36 credits of post-secondary education in any discipline. Through a combination of classroom theory and clinical practice, this three-year diploma prepares your future as a Registered Acupuncturist. Provincial Registration MacEwan University's Acupuncture program prepares you to become a Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta, subject to successful completion of the provincial registration examination administered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA). Our curriculum is based on the latest national and international standards of competency, ensuring that your skills and knowledge are global. MacEwan University’s Acupuncture program serves as the benchmark for registration in Alberta, and we are proud to be the only public, post-secondary program of this kind approved by Alberta Learning. Acupuncture in Practice Acupuncturists work with the body’s energy that flows along well-defined pathways called meridians. Disease and health disorders are viewed as an imbalance of energy. Acupuncturists aim to prevent or treat illness by inserting very thin needles at specific points along the body’s various meridians, normalizing the energy flow. Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can drastically facilitate healing.

Career outcomes

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine practice continue to grow in popularity. With recognition under the Health Disciplines Act as a regulated health care profession, Registered Acupuncturists enjoy a high level of respect in the medical community. With relatively few acupuncturists practicing in Alberta, there continues to be a shortage of comprehensively trained practitioners. Graduates are employed both in private practice and collaborative clinics with other health professionals such as massage therapists, holistic health practitioners, physiotherapists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors and others.
