Course Description

This programme is the only undergraduate programme in Scotland accredited by both the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), the two most respected benchmarks used by editors to hire reporters. Our programme is designed for individuals with a passion for journalism and current affairs, and covers print, radio, television and the web. You’ll gain the practical skills key to success in this competitive industry such as shorthand, news reporting and page layout, use sophisticated video, audio recording and editing equipment, and write for online and social media. You will also study media law, government, ethics and the media industries. Our academic staff are all experienced journalists with credible industry contacts, within the BBC, STV, Newsquest and The Scotsman. Professionals from these organisations frequently deliver guest lectures, mentor students, and facilitate a wide range of placements and extra-curricular opportunities to boost your CV and career prospects.

Career outcomes

This course is accredited by both the NCTJ and BJTC. Most of our students go on to work in the field of journalism, in print, radio, TV and online; public relations; or media industry work. On average, two-thirds of our graduates are in employment in these sectors within six months of graduation. Our recent graduates have secured journalism jobs with the BBC, STV, Sky Sports, Radio Clyde, West Sound, The Daily Record, The Herald and Times Group, Edinburgh Evening News, Real Radio, Central FM, Clyde and Forth Press, The Drum, Greenock Telegraph, Alloa Advertiser, Centre Press News Agency, and The National in Abu Dhabi amongst others.
