Bachelor in Visual Arts(Photography)

Course Description

Study on our Lincoln Center campus for an in-the-thick-of-it experience just steps from the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the many galleries lining the streets of Chelsea. Or head uptown to Rose Hill—just a short train or Ram Van ride away—where the Visual Arts Complex has a beautiful sky-lit studio space with terrazzo floors and a state-of-the-art computer lab. Studios and computer labs at both campuses are available to students when classes are not in session, including weekends, evenings, and summers. The development of a personal photographic vision is the primary objective of the Photography concentration. You will be encouraged to utilize the medium as a means to explore visual communication and aesthetic invention. After a two-course introduction, students may take courses in documentary, digital, and view-camera technique, followed by a Senior Project in their final year. Classes in Tokyo and Rome are also offered during January and over the summer. Instructional methods include technical demonstrations, a mix of guided assignments and self-directed projects, lectures and films on the history of photography, and rigorous critiques. In-class instruction is supplemented by museum and gallery field trips and guest artist talks by significant practitioners in the field.
