Course Description

It might be difficult to imagine life without computers when they’re so central to our information-driven global society. But it’s not difficult to imagine the amazing pursuits you’ll be prepared for with a degree in information systems from Fordham’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Get inspired by the classes we offer. Web programming. Secure cyber networks. Robotics. Video game design. Cyber security. Networking. Database management. Health and medical informatics. The information science curriculum emphasizes systems and applications, including the design of information systems for public or private organizations; application programming and design; and methodologies for storing, retrieving, processing, and transmitting data and information. Our faculty members are active researchers driven by intellectual curiosity and the desire to make an impact. Join them in one of our labs. Requirements: open mind, warm heart, and lots of passion. You’ll learn more than information science here. You’ll also study philosophy, theology, history, mathematics, languages, and the performing arts through Fordham’s common core curriculum, the centerpiece of our liberal arts education. We want you to excel in your field—and as a human being. The curriculum in information science is oriented towards systems and applications. It emphasizes the design of an information system for public or private organizations; application programming and design; and methodologies for storing, retrieving, processing and transmitting data, and information. Students graduating from the program will be prepared for careers in information systems, computer applications, and communication technology as found in government, business, and society. The BS degree requires additional courses from within the major. A minor in information science is available and requires a total of six courses in the discipline.
