Course Description

Well-rounded skills These days, journalists are asked to do more than just write and report stories. They're asked to take their own photographs, design their own pages, and post their own stories online. At Eastern, our students gain first-hand experience with all these skills, both in the classroom and at the university's award-winning student newspaper, The Eastern Progress. Generous and Knowledgeable Faculty The instructors at Eastern enjoy a reputation for being friendly and approachable. They don't just teach a class and then leave for the day. Students get to know their instructors, and instructors get to know their students. The department's faculty also brings a wealth of knowledge to the classroom. Many are leaders in their professional fields, with years of experience at local and regional newspapers and magazines. Career Enrichment Eastern's journalism graduates have a proven track-record for landing jobs at newspapers, magazines and other communication-related businesses. This success is due, in part, to the fact that students gain a lot of first-hand experience at Eastern. They're continually producing stories, designing pages and learning their craft, whether in the classroom, at the student newspaper or at a summer internship with a newspaper or other news medium. All that experience helps students build an impressive work portfolio--one that helps open doors in the newspaper industry upon graduation. Get Involved Right Away At Eastern, students aren't told to wait before they may begin practicing their craft. They're encouraged to get involved right away, whether that means helping host functions and speakers with the university's Society of Professional Journalists chapter or contributing stories and photographs for the student newspaper, The Eastern Progress. And it's that experience that helps deepen our students' education, broadening their understanding of the world and their communities.
