This is a specialist programme geared towards preparing students for higher research in ancient philosophy - partly through direct research training, and partly through modules taught by experts in their field in small-group seminars. Durham has a longstanding tradition of international excellence in the field of ancient philosophy, with several recent doctoral students having gone on to take up academic positions in the UK and abroad. The programme lasts for one year (two years part-time), and centres around a core module on a topic in ancient philosophy.

Postgraduate study at Durham presents an opportunity to develop a range of higher level research skills that can be transferred to the wider graduate job market. Durham University Classics and Ancient History MA and PhD students progress into a diverse range of careers and employment sectors. Some go on to academic careers - or utilise their degrees in areas relevant to their academic study such as heritage, arts, teaching, publishing and journalism. Others progress into areas including banking, law, PR, third sector, consultancy, insurance and administration - with recent graduates working for the Home Office, NHS, Parliament and YouGov.
