BA(Hons) Exercise, Physical Activity and Health

Course Description

This course looks at exercise, physical activity and health in context, from its position in society past and present to its role in campaigns to make the nation more physically active and healthy. It has a strong vocational flavour as a result of being designed with the support of employers within the industry. The study programme is split into three levels with core strands in individual, community and public health. At level four (first year), you will study four compulsory modules that give you a broad underpinning of exercise, physical activity and health theory and policy; sociological theories; historical influences; fitness and exercise testing and health assessment; and an introduction to research skills. This will be supplemented with two optional modules from BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science, BA (Hons) Coaching and Sport Development and other programmes within the Faculty of Health and Science that align with the public health strand of the degree (to be confirmed). At levels five and six (second and third year), you will enhance your knowledge and apply sociological and philosophical theory to the study of exercise, physical activity and health development, become involved in module-related community engagement projects, understand the fundamental principles behind community development work, and appreciate approaches to promote health and physical activity within communities. The focus on health and lifestyle behaviour includes a focus on nutrition for health at level 5. Level six allows you to enhance your knowledge of key health conditions, such as obesity and heart disease, and consider how exercise prescription and a healthy diet aid in the prevention and treatment of these conditions. You will also be able to explore key contemporary issues in health and wellbeing, focusing on issues of particular interest to you. We have strong links with local partner organisations such as schools, local authorities, and the NHS, which allows us to provide a wide variety of opportunities to enhance your professional profile with skills learned in real world situations. For instance, you could become part of a team organising a community or corporate event with an industry partner. You could also undertake a community-based physical activity intervention project or conduct an independent work-based investigation.
