Master of Public Health (MPH)

Course Description

In Fall 2012, the Mailman School of Public Health introduced a breakthrough MPH curriculum that set a new standard for public health education. The result of an intensive schoolwide effort and investment involving more than 150 members of the faculty, as well as students, alumni, and employers, the new curriculum provides the broad systemic understanding, critical thinking skills, and leadership training needed to tackle today’s complex public health challenges. The innovative structure of the two-year Columbia MPH program integrates six components to ensure that learning in one part of the program informs activities and assignments in another. The Core curriculum, taken by all incoming students in their first semester, consists of six broad areas of study known as “studios.” These studios, which are broken down into 18 modules, build on each other to provide a broad, interlocking foundation of knowledge essential for a career in public health. Applicants for the Columbia MPH must select a department. Every department (Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Policy & Management, Population & Family Health, Sociomedical Sciences) at the Mailman School strongly emphasizes teaching and mentorship—in and out of the classroom. Accessible, engaged faculty mentors guide your academic path, open doors to research opportunities, and nurture your career goals.
