Access to Higher Education: Health and Human Sciences

Course Description

The Access Course is for people interested in careers such as nursing, midwifery, health studies, social work, occupational therapy, speech therapy and radiography. You study core skills units: Study Skills, Maths, IT, Tutorial and Professional Development, plus other specialised units relevant to your chosen pathway. You prepare for diploma or degree level study and there is plenty of support to help you apply for the next stage. The course aims to develop language, study skills and team work through the study of the above subjects. Assessment is based on both home and in-class assignments.Limited language and/or maths support are available for selected students.Students are expected to study at least 15 hours a week at home as well as time in class. HEALTH & HUMAN SCIENCES and NURSING - Core skills units: plus units in: Biology. The course is designed for students who want a career in the Health Services, such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, etc., but who do not yet have the academic entry qualifications. SOCIAL WORK PATHWAY- Core skills units plus units in Social Work Provision and Practice and Social Policy. During this course the skills needed for social work and teamwork are stressed.
