Advanced Arts and Entertainment Management Certificate

Course Description

The Advanced Arts and Entertainment Management Certificate provides students with the skill-sets, job experience, and contacts necessary to gain employment in the industry. This one-year program requires two years of post-secondary training or work experience equivalent and offers students a unique blend of course work and practicum experience in the arts and entertainment industry. Students gain an overview of all aspects of arts and entertainment management, including marketing, resource development, and financial, tour, production, and artist management in both the commercial and non-profit cultural sectors. The classroom-based course work for the program commences in the first term (May – August) with the practicum placements following in successive terms. Practicum placements are an essential part of this program. The students gain practical experience and cultivate relationships with one or more cultural organizations in the community working for professional arts and entertainment organizations. Past placements have included the Arts Club Theatre, 604 Records, Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, Turner Music, Vancouver Civic Theatres, Dexter Entertainment, Vancouver International Children's Festival, Nettwerk Records and many more. Our graduates have found employment with all of the aforementioned placements as well as Sam Feldman and Associates, Vancouver East Cultural Centre, PuSh Festival, Mint Records,Firehall Arts Centre, Live Nation, and Bard on the Beach, to name just a few.

* On successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to: o explain key concepts regarding planning, funding, producing, budgeting and promoting and arts and entertainment event o generate the administrative aspects of planning and producing an event o apply arts and entertainment management knowledge, skills, theories and processes learned in the classroom to hands-on, relevant work experience, including volunteer activities and practicums o operate as part of a team to produce a performing arts event o demonstrate skills in written communication through clear and concise writing o employ principles of effective oral communication including effectively managing meetings and groups o prepare, write and monitor an arts and entertainment budget o outline the operation of an arts/entertainment event to determine the strengths and weaknesses o distinguish all aspects of the creation, production and dissemination of an artistic project
