Art Institute Certificate

Course Description

The Art Institute, specializing in Sculpture, Media Art and Printmaking, is a one-year post-graduate certificate program that is comparable to artist-in-residence programs. The Institute offers advanced studies to artists with several years of experience in sculpture, media art, or printmaking, artists practicing in parallel media such as painting or photography, and recent university or art school graduates. * Sculpture studios include the necessary facilities for woodworking, steel fabrication, stone cutting, art foundry processes and paper casting. Areas of concern are often multi-disciplinary and may involve the media centre. * Media Art offers concentrated development in the areas of video, audio, performance, installation, public art, digital and wet photography. Our studios are equipped with digital video, audio and image editing suites, a host of AV equipment and a fully equipped black and white darkroom. * Printmaking studios include the equipment necessary for professional editioning in advanced colour intaglio, relief, silkscreen, collagraph or photo/digital printmaking. The studio uses Imagon and Zacryl processes and is equipped with presses up to 58” x 97”, a Mac lab and a 42" HP Z6200 PS UV printer. Art Institute artists have access to the facilities seven days a week, with one day designated for seminars/demonstrations and critiques. Seminars and tutorials often feature guest artists and faculty who are professionals in their fields. With the permission of the instructor, Institute members may also sit in on Studio Art lectures and classes at no additional cost. Members may also apply to pursue individual research beyond the one-year certificate. A major component of the experience is the interchange between Art Institute members and technicians and faculty, which may include critiques, encouragement of work in progress and exposure to new materials/processes. The atmosphere is stimulating and supportive of the individual’s ongoing personal aesthetic development.
